Product of two of America's most prominent families, he was the son of Gertrude Vanderbilt, daughter of the railroad baron Cornelius Vanderbilt, and Harry Payne Whitney, heir to a tobacco and oil fortune. Founder of Pan American Airways, he financed the development of Technicolor and Cinerama and was co-producer of several David O. Selznick films including Gone With The Wind.
