A member of the North Korean Politburo since 1969 - the highest organ within the ruling Workers (Communist) Party. Held ambassadorial posts abroad and was Chairman of the Committee for Cultural Relations with Foreign Countries in the 1950s and 1960s.
Richard Turner, cardiologist, died 1 September, aged 83. Senior Physician and cardiologist, Western General Hospital, Edinburgh, 1946-74; Senior Research Fellow in Preventive Cardiology, Edinburgh University, 1974-84 (Reader in Medicine, 1960-74). Eminent in the fields of the management of high blood pressure and the prevention of coronary artery disease. Campaigned to reduce consumption of dairy products.
Paul Garber, museum curator, died Arlington Virginia 23 September, aged 93. Curator of the Smithsonian Institutes's National Air and Space Museum, Washington, for which he acquired Charles Lindbergh's Spirit of St Louis and the Wright Brothers' biplane that first flew at Kitty Hawk in 1903.
