Sir Richard Dobson, businessman, died 24 October, aged 79. President, British American Tobacco 1976-79; deputy chairman 1962-68, vice- chairman 1968-70, chairman 1970- 76. Joined BAT in 1935, and was appointed to the board in 1955. Served as a Spitfire pilot in the Second World War. Briefly, 1976-77, chairman of British Leyland. Author of China Cycle (1946).

Harry Butler, news editor and shorthand expert, died 29 October, aged 80. Championed the Teeline system of shorthand introduced in the 1960s. Worked for the Press Association 1947-78, and taught on the City University's postgraduate journalism course 1976-91. Author of several books about journalism and the Teeline system, including Teeline Self-taught (1975), Teeline Made Simple (1982) and The Story of British Shorthand from 1588 (1951).
