Pu Jie, political commissioner, died Peking 28 February, aged 87. The younger brother of Pu Yi, the last emperor of China, who was deposed aged six in 1911. The two brothers collaborated with Japanese occupying forces and were captured by the Red Army in 1945 and imprisoned in the Soviet Union. They were handed over to the Chinese in 1949 and 're-educated' under the Mao regime. In 1960 Pu Jie was released and spent his final years in retirement in his family's old courtyard home in Peking.

Lt-Gen Laurence Craigie, aviator, died Riverside, California 27 February, aged 92. Became the United States' first military jet pilot on 2 October 1942, when he piloted the Bell XP-59A Airacomet on a secret 20-minute flight from Muroc Army Airfield, in the Mojave Desert.

Lars Gammelgaard, politician, died 11 February aged 49. Danish Fisheries Minister 1986-88. Leader until last year of the Danish Conservative Party's parliamentary group.
