From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. From hurling a security guard’s phone across the stage in the middle of a performance to frequently voicing her forthright feminist opinions, Nicki Minaj is famed for her unapologetic no-holds-barred approach to matters.

The world-renowned rapper and businesswoman has now spoken out against racial double standards and noted the irony of the lyrics of Kanye West’s 2005 hit single "Gold Digger" about black men being more likely to marry a white woman after they become successful given he decided to marry Kim Kardashian.

“I'm so tired of black women feeling that when our men get rich, they're going to leave them for a woman of a different race,” Minaj told Marie Claire.

“It wasn't funny when Kanye said [in his 2005 hit 'Gold Digger'], 'When he get on, he'll leave your a*** for a white girl' - and Kanye happens to be with a white girl now. It wasn't funny when he said it; it was the f***ing truth.”

Minaj also suggested there was a double standard which existed for black women in the media and argued it was perceived as more socially acceptable for white women to post provocative selfies than women of colour.

Minaj, who was announced as one of Time magazine’s 1000 most influential people of 2016, has previously spoken out about the need for women to be “unapologetic” when asking for more money in the world of work.

A representative for Kardashian West and West did not immediately respond to request for comment.
