Katie Piper, a model and TV presenter who suffered horrific burns after being the victim of a brutal acid attack, has announced that she and her partner of two years are expecting their first baby.
Speaking to the Sunday Mirror the 30-year-old said, “I just want to shout it from the rooftops. I love children and I’d always hoped I’d be able to have a family. I’m so excited.”
Ms Piper, who sustained burns to her face and chest in a sulphuric acid attack arranged by former boyfriend Daniel Lynch said, “I’ve always known that I have wanted children but there were moments after what happened to me that I never thought this would happen, I never believed this would be my future. It’s beyond incredible.”
Lynch and an accomplice, Stefan Sylvestre, have since been jailed for life.
Since her ordeal Ms Piper, from Andover in Hampshire has become a prominent philanthropist and campaigner working on behalf of burns survivors, appearing in a number of television documentaries. The story of her attack and subsequent recovery was made into a BAFTA award-winning documentary called Katie: My Beautiful Face.
In 2009 she set up her own charity, the Katie Piper Foundation, which works to improve outcomes for burns survivors, helps with rehabilitation and provides a number of other support services.
She is currently featured in Marks and Spencer’s latest add campaign, alongside the likes of actress Dame Helen Mirren, artist Tracy Emin and the singer Ellie Goulding.
