The former Smiths frontman, who once compared meat consumption to paedophilia, dedicated an entire blog post to the incident called “The shame of beloved Mexico” which was published via his fan site True to You last week.
“I felt delighted this week to see serial killer Karla de los Angeles justifiably gored in a bullring in Mexico City against her largely defenseless opponent,” he wrote.
“Make no mistake: there is no such thing as bullfighting. For the torment and slaughter of each bull there is an avowed plan and a strict script, so therefore there is no possibility of a contest of any kind. Yet there is the illusion of contest and action even if the order of events is very efficient – so efficient, in fact, that whenever the bull 'wins' it is reported that the event has 'gone wrong'.”
In particular, he highlighted a recent radio interview the female bullfighter gave, during which she expressed her sadness that she “could not cut off the bull’s ear”.
“Well, Karla, please understand this: we are sad that the bull did not come away with YOUR ear,” he added.
A strict vegetarian, Morrissey is well known for his hard line approach to promoting animal rights.
When discussing animal cruelty in China in 2010, he famously told the Guardian: “You can't help but feel that the Chinese people are a subspecies.”
In 2009, he exited the live stage in Coachella because the smell of burning animals was making him sick.
“I can smell burning flesh,” he told the crowd. “And I hope to God it's human.”
“It would be a great help if Princess Anne gassed Jamie Oliver,” he told Irish magazine Hot Press in 2014. “He's killed more animals than McDonald's.”
And then there’s the aforementioned paedophilia comparison.
“If you have access to YouTube, you should click on to what is called The video the meat industry doesn’t want you to see,” he wrote during a separate Q&A for True To You published last January.
“If this doesn’t affect you in a moral sense then you’re probably granite. I see no difference between eating animals and paedophilia. They are both rape, violence, murder.”
