From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. Miley Cyrus has sent a letter to New York Governor Andrew Cuomo asking for $4.75 million in the state budget to be put toward protecting homeless youth and ensuring they have a safe place to sleep.

The singer wrote that she would like to see that money used for 1,000 new beds set aside for homeless children, citing a severe shortage of beds for the youth in the US.

“As you probably know, 1.6 million kids across the US are homeless, and the problem is especially serious in New York,” she wrote on Instagram.

“Between 2009 and 2012, the number of kids turned away from homeless youth shelters grew from 570 to more than 5,000.”

Cyrus founded the Happy Hippie Foundation in 2014 “to rally young people to fight injustice, starting with youth homelessness”.

Since starting the foundation, she has been giving backyard concerts to raise money for the cause and invited a young homeless man to accept an award for her at the 2014 Video Music Awards, Time reported.
