From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Miley Cyrus’ risqué change of direction has catapulted her from Disney princess to hipster queen.
It’s also attracted serious scorn from older female artists.
Sinead O’Connor famously wrote an open letter to the singer urging her not to “obscure” her talent by allowing herself “to be pimped”. Annie Lennox said she was “disturbed and dismayed” by her “overtly sexualised” performances. And Marianne Faithfull didn’t mince her words when she labelled her and fellow pop nudist Rihanna “rubbishy sluts”. But it seems Cyrus hasn’t finished rattling the traditional feminist cage: she’s about to make her big debut at the opening at the NYC Porn Film Festival.
The singer appears in “Tongue Tied”, a video collaboration with artist Quentin Jones. A two-minute version of the bondage-themed piece actually premiered for the first time last April via Nowness:

But this will be the first time the full-length footage will be shown alongside hardcore pornography, art videos and discussions about sex.
Adult magazine founding editor Sarah Nicole Prickett described the original piece as follows: “As part of Cyrus' current Bangerz tour is a two-minute video directed by mixed-media artist and filmmaker Quentin Jones, whose signature soignée graphics and splashes of paint transform a pornoriffic-almost-parody into artsploitation.
“Stripping the color from our heroine's cartoonish persona, Jones goes in on popular symbols of sex: the fishnets; the beauty mark made darker like Marilyn's; the black collar fit for a Bunny. To Miley, as to a little kid, even the most dangerous object is a toy. And like a kid's, her near-nudity is hardly erotic. She's just happier naked. Her poses are jokes, even that infamous tongue — stuck out — remains firmly in cheek. She holds up the cardboard cut-out and winks. Get it? She's playing with herself.”
NYC Porn Film Festival opens on 27 February.
