Mila Kunis has spoken about the difficulties of dating someone as famous as Macaulay Culkin, describing the reaction fans had to him as “abnormal”.
Kunis and Culkin began dating in 2002 when she was 18-years-old and he was 22. They were together for nine years before splitting in 2011.
Kunis said although over a decade had passed since her former boyfriend shot to fame in the Home Alone films, he was still subjected to an unprecedented amount of attention and interest when they were dating.
“He was huge because you couldn’t walk down the street with him,” she told Howard Stern on Sirius XM. “He always had this weird attraction. Fans would just scream at him, they didn’t even know how to react. It wasn’t a normal response to a celebrity, fans responded in a very abnormal way to him.”
Kunis’ life is now a far cry away from that of Culkin's who now works as a roadie since "retiring" from acting. Kunis on the other hand, who began her career on That 70s Show as a teenager, enjoyed mainstream success through a number of film roles including her Golden Globe-nominated performance in Black Swan.
After splitting with Culkin, Kunis began a relationship with her former That 70s Show co-star Ashton Kutcher. The couple married last year and have a two-year old daughter, Wyatt.
The couple is usually notoriously private about their marriage yet, as so often happens on Howard Stern’s shows, Kunis offered some rare insight into the origins of their relationship.
Proving that life imitates art, Kunis said their relationship began soon after she finished her film Friends With Benefits with Justin Timberlake and Kutcher had finished No Strings Attached with Natalie Portman – both movies about couples who start off pledging to keep their relationship strictly casual before falling in love.
“If we just paid attention to these movies we should know that sh*t like this does not work out in real life,” the 32-year old said. “Well, we clearly didn’t pay attention and we shook hands like ‘Let’s just have fun’ and literally we lived out our movies.”
After rekindling their teenage friendship at an awards show, the Bad Moms actress said this resulted in an invitation to a party at Kutcher's. "I stayed the whole night and that was the first time I’d ever slept over when I was single at a guy’s house," she said.
Kunis explained she and her husband sought to keep their relationship casual at the beginning given she had not long split with Culkin and Kutcher was recently separated from his wife of six years, Demi Moore.
“We both end up having a lot of talks about how this was a mistake and how he needs to go be single and I need to go be single,” she said. “[…] We both were in agreement like, ‘Yeah this is just fun’. Three months later I was like: ‘This isn’t fun anymore’.”
Kunis also discussed some of the aspects of fame she finds difficult to deal with, particularly the paparazzi, who tend to follow her and her 38-year-old husband around wherever they can. She told the radio show host drones were spotted in their garden shortly after their daughter was born in 2014.
