From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

You’re never too small to make a stand against Vladimir Putin.

Mighty Taco, a fast-food chain of Mexican restaurants, has banned the Russian president from its branches until he stops “ picking on people” – referring to his seizure of Crimea from Ukraine.

The company, which has 23 eateries in western New York, posted a message on its Facebook page earlier this week, forbidding the politician from entering any of their locations - “even the one in Delaware and Hertel!”

“Normally at Mighty Taco, we don’t like to get political, but someone has to do something – and that someone is us!” said the firm’s Facebook statement.

“Mr Putin you won’t be ordering a Mighty Taco around here any time soon! “No one likes a bully, so stop picking on people and maybe you will be welcomed back to Mighty Taco.”

It is not known whether or not Putin likes Mexican food. McDonald's closed its restaurants in Crimea this week, citing "manufacturing reasons".

In other news relating to the controversial Russian president, he finalised his divorce from his wife of 30 years, Lyudmila, earlier this week. She described the parting as “civilised” and said that they will “always remain close”.

“It was a joint decision,” Putin said last year. “We hardly see each other; each of us has our own life.”
