The actress battled the disease for seven years, before her death on 25 October in her Californian home.
Her sister, Julie Strassman, confirmed the news.
“She was the funniest, smartest person I ever met,” Strassman told Deadline.
“And talented. She knew everything. Now I won’t be able to call her and ask her questions.”
Born on 28 April, 1948, in New York, Strassman grew up in New Jersey before moving to Los Angeles when she was 18 where she first launched a singing career before moving into acting.
In 1975, she landed her breakthrough role as in US sitcom Welcome Back Kotter, in which she played Julie Kotter, the wife of lead character Gabe Kotter.
Other television acting credits include Booker, Tremors, Third Watch, Providence, and Noah Knows Best.
Her best-known film was Honey, I Shrunk The Kids, when she played Diane Szalinski.
She is survived by her brother Steven Strassman and her daughter, Elizabeth “Lizzie” Collector.
