From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. Mary Ellen Trainor, who performed in all four Lethal Weapon films as well as the Goonies, has died at the age of 62.

It was announced by Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy that Trainor passed away on 20 May. The two went to university together.

Trainer's career began on the Steven Spielberg film 1941.

"Mare and I have been close since our days together as college roommates, and she even provided the introduction to Steven Spielberg that jumpstarted my career," said Kennedy.

"She was a great actress, warm friend and generous spirit."

Trainor worked on the action films starring Mel Gilbson and Danny Glover, playing a police psychologist. She also worked with her then-husband Robert Zemeckis on films such as Forrest Gump, Back To The Future Part II and Death Becomes Her. The couple divorced in 2000.

Her role in the Goonies, in which she played the mother, was another stand-out role for Trainor.
