From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

DiCaprio co-produced and featured in Before The Flood – a 90-minute documentary on climate change directed by Martin Scorsese also starring Barack Obama, Ban Ki-Moon, Elon Musk and Pope Francis.
DiCaprio has long been on a mission to highlight the damaging effects of climate change by speaking in front of the United Nations multiple times, working through his foundation which he launched in 1998 and speaking up during his long-awaited, victorious Academy Award acceptance speech earlier this year.
Now, after building a successful relationship with President Obama on climate change, he has targeted the daughter of the President-elect.
DiCaprio and the 35-year-old businesswoman had a recent private meeting where The Revenant actor presented her with a DVD of the documentary, The Independent understands.
Donald Trump’s victory has concerned environmentalists worldwide due to his previous denials of climate change. In 2012, he tweeted: “The concept of global warming was created by and for the Chinese in order to make U.S. manufacturing non-competitive.”
However, despite his approach, it was reported last week that his daughter wants to become an ambassador for the environmental issue.
Ms Trump is viewed as one of the more liberal-leaning influencers close to the Trump campaign. On Friday, The New York Times reported some of her “left-leaning high-powered friends and acquaintances” are hoping she will be able to influence their various causes in her father’s presidency.
Indeed, she appears to have taken on a very active role as a First Daughter, having already been pictured attending a meeting along with her father and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe 10 days after his election win.
A spokesperson for Ms Trump declined to comment.
