Motörhead have asked fans to 'toast along with us'
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference. For fans wishing to mourn and pay respect to Lemmy, the Motörhead frontman who died last week, there is now an official chance to do so.
Lemmy, whose real name is Ian Fraser Kilmister, passed away aged 70 two days after learning he had an aggressive form of cancer on December 28.
His family and friends have since announced that a memorial service for him will be streamed live on Youtube on Saturday 9 January.
The funeral will be held in Hollywood, California but the band have respectfully asked that fans don’t attend the actual ceremony but watch it via the power of the internet instead, according to their Facebook page.
The stream will be through Motörhead’s official Youtube channel and is currently counting down the three days until the funeral.
Below the video it reads: “We want you ALL to be a part of this memorial service.
“So wherever you are, PLEASE get together and watch with fellow Motörheadbangers and friends. Go to your favourite bar, or your favourite club, make sure they have access to an internet connection and toast along with us. Or simply invite your pals around and celebrate Lemm’s life at home.
“Whatever your venue, and however you can, let’s be sure to gather globally on Saturday 9th and celebrate the life of our dear friend and irreplaceable icon.”
It was also reported today that a petition has been set up to name one of the newly classified elements in the periodic table ‘Lemmium’ as a tribute to the musician.
The funeral will be streamed at 3pm PST, so 11pm GMT.
