John Cusack, Fifty Shades of Grey author EL James and Rose McGowan are just some of the names who have paid tribute to the late dame of film noir, Lauren Bacall.

The veteran actress, famed for her wise-cracks on romance and her sultry, husky voice, died early on Tuesday morning after suffering a massive stroke at her home in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Her death was first confirmed by her late husband Humphrey Bogart’s estate.

“With deep sorrow, yet with great gratitude for her amazing life, we confirm the passing of Lauren Bacall,” they confirmed via a statement on Twitter last night.

Bacall’s shot to fame after she appeared on the cover of Harper’s Bazaar at the age of 19.

She went on to enjoy a lengthy career in film which spanned over 60 years, Bacall starred in a multitude of classic works, from The Big Sleep and Dark Passage, to How to Marry a Millionaire and Key Largo, among others.

So naturally, Hollywood fell over itself to pay their respects on social media:

Bacall - real name Betty Perske - was born to Jewish immigrant parents in New York in 1924.

She was signed by Warner Bros. in 1943 and married actor Humphrey Bogart two years later.

The couple remained married until he died from esophageal cancer in 1957.
