Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

A teenage girl who is attempting to collect 2,000 shoes by next week to help those in need has appeared to fulfilled her goal, courtesy of Kim Kardashian-West.

Kardashian-West tweeted on Thursday that she had watched a programme featuring the girl and had been looking online to locate her and make a donation of 1,000 shoes.

Referencing that she has good contacts in the shoe industry willing to help her out, the reality TV star joked she “thinks she knows the designer of the Shoe of the Year Award.”

She was, of course, referring to her husband Kanye West who last week received the Footwear News award for his Yeezy trainer in collaboration with Adidas.

After asking her 37.6million followers for help in tracking down the girl, they soon signalled to 17-year-old Amelia Flores from Kansas.

Dish Nation – the TV show Kardashian-West said she was watching while breastfeeding her five-day-old son Saint – told the story of Ms Flores who is striving to collect 2,000 pairs of shoes for people in need by December 18.

Ms Flores, 17, from Kansas was recently chronicled in the local Wichita Eagle paper. She told them of her campaign for the charity Soles4Souls which strives to “fight poverty through the collection and distribution of shoes and clothing”.

Ms Flores credits the charity for helping her and her family when Hurricane Katrina struck New Orleans in 2005. She says launching the shoe drive will be a “way to give back to them and say thank you”.
