Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Kim Kardashian-West has thanked Emily Ratajkowski for defending her against the backlash she received for posting a nude selfie.

Last week, Kardashian-West divided the internet when she shared an image of herself completely naked apart from two modesty bars.

Ratajkowski dismissed the negative reaction to Kardashian West's selfie as "sexist bullshit". The model and actress shared a series of tweets saying men shouldn’t be commenting on a woman’s decision to post a nude photo and suggested they read her Lenny letter where she argued for the right for women to express and celebrate their sexuality without being subject to labels like “trashy” or the assumption they are playing up to men’s desires.

On Monday Ratajkowski shared a photo of roses and a thank-you note from Kardashian-West, which read: “Emily, Hey I wanted to thank you so much for your support last week. I saw your tweets and just think it’s so powerful when women support other women! So thank you! xo Kim.”

Ratajkowski also shared a quote from the feminist activist Emma Goldman.

Kardashian-West's critics included Bette Midler, who suggested she should swallow the camera if she wanted people to see something they hadn’t, Chloe Grace Moretz for not using her platform to teach women they are more than their bodies and Piers Morgan, who offered to buy her some clothes. She responded to all three individuals with an essay defending her right to express her sexuality as a woman to mark International Women’s Day.

“It’s 2016. The body-shaming and slut-shaming - it’s like, enough is enough. I will not live my life dictated by the issues you have with my sexuality," she wrote. "You be you and let me be me. I am a mother. I am a wife, a sister, a daughter, an entrepreneur and I am allowed to be sexy.”
