From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Bette Midler has given the final word on the Justin Bieber nude scandal, criticising the singer’s dad for "abandon[ing] his son" shortly after his weird (and now-deleted) tweet congratulating his son for appearing well-endowed.
Bieber was photographed naked last week while on holiday in Bora Bora in what kicked off another discussion about the ethics of photographing celebrities when there is a reasonable expectation of privacy.
While the pop star has not commented on the situation, his father, Jeremy, tweeted him with the disturbing comment “What do you feed that thing? #proud daddy”, which was enough for Midler to finally give us her thoughts on the situation.
Though Bieber Snr has deleted his tweet, Midler called him “the biggest d**k in this situation”.
“@justinbieber dad tweeted he's proud of his son's penis size. I think the biggest d**k in this situation is the dad who abandoned his son,” she wrote.
Bieber was raised by his mother, Patricia Malette, and his grandmother, Diane, but his father has become more involved in his life since the Canadian rose to fame.
Neither Bieber has responded to Midler’s tweet, probably because it’s quite hard to come back from a scatching burn like that.
