From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. John Oliver showed no restraint when he launched an expletive laden rant against the “gigantic f**king assholes” who committed the Paris terror attacks.

On Sunday, the outspoken comedian unleashed a tirade against the militants who killed 129 people and injured 352 in five gun and bomb attacks in central Paris, in an attack claimed by Isis.

Speaking on HBO’s Last Week Tonight, Oliver had a message for Isis about just how futile their actions ultimately are, warning the terror group that they were bringing “a philosophy of rigorous self-abnegation to a pastry fight” by targeting France.

“We begin with a few words about France, which on Friday suffered the deadliest attack on its soil since World War II,” Oliver said. “It’s hardly been 48 hours, and much is still unknown, but there are a few things we can say for certain. And this is when it actually helps to be on HBO, where those things can we said without restraint, because after the many necessary and appropriate moments of silence, I’d like to offer you a moment of premium cable profanity.

“So here is where things stand: As of now we know this attack was carried out by gigantic f**king assholes. Unconscionable flaming assholes. Possibly working with other f**king assholes. Definitely working in service of an ideology of pure ass-hole-ry.

“Second, and this goes almost without saying: F**k these assholes. F**k them, if I may say, sideways.

“And third, it is important to remember, nothing about what these assholes are trying to do is going to work. France is going to endure and I’ll tell you why. If you are in a war of culture and lifestyle with France, good f**king luck.

“Go ahead, bring your bankrupt ideology. They’ll bring Jean-Paul Sartre, Edith Piaf, fine wine, Gauloise cigarettes, Camus, Camembert, madeleines, macarons, and the fucking croquembouche. You just brought a philosophy of rigorous self-abnegation to a pastry fight, my friend. You are f**ked.

“So to the people of France, our thoughts are truly with you and I do not doubt there will be more to say on all of this as events unspool.”

Saturday Night Live paid tribute to the victims of the massacre in a more solemn message, with cast member Cecily Strong telling Paris in both English and French: “We stand with you”.
