From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Just in case you wondered what Jeremy Clarkson did on the eve he learned he was no longer employed by the BBC, he didn’t spend it holed up at his London abode sobbing into a glass of Rosé.

Instead, the former Top Gear presenter celebrated his sacking at a party thrown by Jemima Goldsmith – former girlfriend of Russell Brand and a millionaire Unicef ambassador.

Clarkson’s girlfriend Phillipa Sage, Angus Deayton, Boris Johnson’s journalist sister Rachel Johnson and experimental chef Heston Blumenthal were all among those who attended the event. Co-presenters James May and Richard Hammond, however, were nowhere to be seen.

The show host has further reason to celebrate today, too, after producer Oisin Tymon decided not to press charges against him for the “unprovoked physical attack”.

A spokesperson for North Yorkshire Police said on Wednesday after Lord Tony Hall’s official statement regarding Clarkson’s sacking: “North Yorkshire Police is liaising with the BBC regarding the alleged incident in North Yorkshire involving Jeremy Clarkson.

“We have asked the BBC for the report which details the findings of their internal investigation into the matter.

“The information will be assessed appropriately and action will be taken by North Yorkshire Police where necessary.

It would not be appropriate for North Yorkshire Police to comment further at this time.”

However, Tymon has since decided not to pursue the complaint.

On Thursday, Clarkson called on his fans not to blame the producer, who had been trolled on social media, for the sacking.

Speaking to reporters outside his London residence, he said: "All I would like to say is I wish people would leave Ois alone, because none of this is his fault."
