From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Sir Ian Mckellen’s trip to China has involved him visiting many of the traditional tourist spots.

The veteran actor is in the country with the British Council and British Film Institute to celebrate the work of William Shakespeare and during his trip he’s shared photos from his typical tourist visits to the Forbidden City and Tiananmen Square in Beijing and the Great Wall of China.

However, somewhere less likely for the 77-year-old to be spotted was Shanghai’s marriage market, yet visit he did and advertise himself he did.

The city’s marriage market is where parents go to post their son’s and daughter’s details in a bid to find them a suitable spouse.

In the picture, Sir Ian can be seen holding a sign which jokingly showcases what he has to offer a potential spouse. “Ian, 5”11, 77 years, Cambridge University, House in London, Still active”, the sign said with a self-portrait added in for good measure.

Sir Ian has already visited India in a bid to promote the works of the Bard on the 400th anniversary of his death. His next stop will be Russia.
