From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Perhaps Hillary Clinton’s campaign staff were trialling a new social media strategy, perhaps it was a method to attract young voters, perhaps Clinton herself just got fed up of being called “Crooked Hillary”. Whatever the reason - the presumptive Democrat presidential candidate has issued the ultimate Millennial shut down to Donald Trump.
On Thursday, Trump aired his thoughts on President Obama endorsing Clinton, whom he prefers to call “Crooked Hillary”, on Twitter writing: "Obama just endorsed Crooked Hillary. He wants four more years of Obama – but nobody else does!"
Clinton simply replied: “Delete your account”.
The put-down is more commonly used by social media users in response to their friends/a celebrity/anyone who has shared a particularly bad or unfunny post to suggest they should now stay away from social media for everyone’s sake.
The tweet became Clinton’s most retweeted tweet ever and the most popular of the US presidential campaign so far, reaching 370,000 retweets and 450,000 likes at present. Of course, Twitter users had a field day.
Others suggested “delete your account” was or is now over.
A notable two hours later Trump replied asking how long it took her “staff” to come up with that tweet (five minutes according to the time stamp) and also brought up the continuing investigation into the presidential hopeful’s email accounts during her time as Secretary of State.
This isn't the first time Clinton has appeared to try and to be in touch with young people through social media, although this tweet has definitely been the most successful attempt. Back in August, a tweet asking followers to explain how their student debt makes them feel in “3 emojis” was roundly mocked by the internet.
