Are you ready to watch the greatest sporting show on earth? The London 2012 Olympic Games get off to a spectacular start in less than 1,000 days’ time. Inspired by this celebration of sporting excellence, British Airways, the official airline partner of the London 2012 Games, has launched its own search for excellence called Great Britons.
The judges are looking for talented individuals and groups who demonstrate the values associated with the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games and who strive to be the best in their chosen field.
The categories are sport, art and design, fashion, performing arts, innovation, and community. Only those who can demonstrate that they are determined, competitive and courageous enough to follow their dreams will win.
Round One winner : Daniel Dolan, Performing Arts
The next Billy Elliot in the making, Daniel Dolan, 16, from Widnes, is a precociously talented ballet dancer. He has attended summer courses at the prestigious Boston Ballet School, Miami City Ballet and The Juilliard School in New York and, after gaining sponsorship, recently started at the world-famous Bolshoi Ballet Academy in Moscow. Incredibly, he is only the third male Briton to be offered a place there in the school’s 233-year history. Dolan won flights to Moscow for him and his family. “My flight took me to the start of a very exciting and challenging journey. Training with the Bolshoi Ballet is a fantastic opportunity and a great honour,” he says. “The fees for training at the world’s best ballet school are expensive, so free flights for me and my family to take us over to Russia are much appreciated.”
