From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Glenn Beck has been suffering from a rare and serious neurological disease which he has kept a secret for years.
His illness “baffled some of the best doctors in the world”, and caused him to forget names, people and conservations and also giving him severe pain. The right-wing presenter also never slept, but was rarely tired.
“It has frightened me and my family, as we didn't know what was happening,“ the conservative radio and television host said on TheBlaze, a network he founded. He formerly presented the Glenn Beck television show on Fox News.
“While I was at Fox, the pain would get so bad that my camera crew, our executive producer Tiffany and I had worked out hand signals so they would know when to take the camera off of me.
“We didn't know at the time what was causing me to feel as though, out of nowhere, my hands and feet, or arms and legs would feel like someone had just crushed them, set them on fire or pushed broken glass into them.”
Beck decided not to publicly discuss his health for “personal reasons, business reasons and you name it”.
He was told by doctors that he would no longer be able to function in 10 years’ time, after having taken a test for people with traumatic brain injury and testing in the bottom 10 per cent.
Eventually, Carrick Brain Centers, rehabilitation centre in Texas, found some answers.
“We went and after a few short visits they found that I had several things going on - from an autoimmune disorder to adrenal fatigue, and they found the connection on everything that was going on,” Beck said.
“Me never having to sleep was finally understandable. The last sign of adrenal failure is a hyperextension of your adrenal glands. In other words, I didn't need sleep. I could have been lifting cars during my time at Fox!”
He says that his conditioned has improved, following a drastic lifestyle change.
“After months of treatment and completely changing the way I eat, sleep, work and live along with ongoing hormonal treatment and intensive physical therapy, I have reversed the process,” he said.
“My brain is back online in a big way. I have received a clean bill of health.”
