From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Stephen Fry remained “very happy” with the news he’s set to wed stand-up comic Elliott Spencer, despite the fact his husband-to-be managed to bump his Bentley while attempting to flee reporters surrounding his home yesterday.

The beaming couple emerged from the Piccadilly property on Tuesday afternoon sporting matching Rhodium engagement rings.

Telling the waiting press that they were off to celebrate their engagement, Spencer promptly managed to hit the £150,000 Bentley Continental GT as he attempted to steer it out of the garage, the Metro reports.

“It’s nothing,” Spencer said as he eased the rest of the vehicle onto the road, while an apparently “wincing” Fry sat next to him.

The QI presenter confirmed the news on Twitter yesterday, after handing a formal notice into a registry office in Norfolk near to where he grew up.

The two will likely marry in a year before the notice expires.

Fry's personal assistant told PA the wedding was a private matter, adding: “Stephen Fry is very happy and proud to say that he has set the wheels in motion for a wedding some time in the future but no date has been set due to a busy work schedule.”

Spencer’s father Robert has since declared the family were “over the moon” with the announcement.

Fry, on the other hand, has been left so touched by the congratulations he’s received, he’s had to listen to piano music to calm himself down.

“Your adorable tweets are bringing me close to sobbing,” he tweeted. “Off for a walk and a blast of Jorge Bolet.”
