Donald Trump tells the Pope: Isis are coming for you

"That’s a dream of theirs, to go into Italy," he says. Well it is lovely this time of year.

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

As Professional Billionaire Donald Trump continues to tour the United States in a bid to one day become president, he is proving one and for all that Republicans really do say the craziest things.

Trump was asked what he would do if he met Pope Francis, who is set to visit the US next month, as the two have very different views on capitalism. Pope Francis has talked about capitalism being an avenue that leads to greed and corruption, something which Trump doesn’t exactly deny.

"The Pope, I hope, can only be scared by God,” Trump began. "If you look at what’s going on, they better hope that capitalism works because it’s the only thing we have right now."

Though the two might disagree on a number of things, Trump admitted he would be an ally to the Pope, and would respond to him with a dire warning.

"I’d [tell him] Isis wants to get you,” he said. “You know that Isis wants to go in and take over the Vatican? You know, that’s a dream of theirs, to go into Italy.”

Trump added that fundamentally, he thought the Pope was "a good guy" and actually said he thought he was probably not opposed to capitalism.

He also said The Bible was his favourite book, which, given that it warns about greed and corruption ruining evil men, is quite a surprise when you think about it.
