Speaking to CNN, Melania Trump, who was sitting beside her husband, reacted with a surprised “oh” and laughed.
“She’s amazing when she speaks,” insisted Mr Trump.
“She’s an amazing public speaker.
"So she’s agreed to do two or three speeches, and I think it’s going to be big speeches, important speeches - the main thing is it’s going to be great."
Last week at the Alfred E Smith dinner, Mr Trump’s biggest joke came at his wife’s expense, when he reminded the audience of how she gave a speech that was very similar to Michelle Obama's 2008 speech at the Republican National Convention.
Some passages in the two speeches matched, almost word for word.
Pointing to what he described as bias of the media, he said: “Michelle Obama gives a speech. And everyone loves it, it’s fantastic. They think she's absolutely great.
”My wife Melania gives the exact same speech. And people get on her case. And I don’t get it. I don’t know why.”
The joke came just several months after the convention in Ohio in July, which was seen to be a key moment for the potential first lady.
The Trump campaign issued a statement the next day, signed by staffer Meredith McIver, to apologise and claim responsibility for the gaff.
Ms Trump has not been a constant fixture at her husband’s side on the campaign trail, and she has only appeared for major events like the convention and the three presidential debates.
She told CNN previously that her priority was to take care of her son, Barron.
