Donald Trump has said he wishes his daughter Ivanka did not like his rival candidate Hilary Clinton’s daughter Chelsea.

Speaking at a rally in Colorado on Friday, the 70-year-old Republican presidential candidate, joked that he had probed his daughter about whether she genuinely liked Chelsea.

“My daughter likes Chelsea and Chelsea likes my daughter, what are you going to do, that’s the way it is. That’s okay,” he told the audience.

“I asked Ivanka, I said ‘do you like Chelsea’. ‘I do dad’. ‘Really?’ ‘No I really do’. ‘Ah I wish you didn’t it would be a lot easier’,” he added.

Nevertheless, the real estate mogul accepted that the pair liked each other and commended Chelsea for her performance at the Democratic convention.

Ivanka, 34, and Chelsea, 36, have continued to maintain a friendship despite their parents' intense political rivalry. They are both based in Manhattan, New York and were introduced by their husbands a few years ago.

Both Ivanka and Chelsea have both been vocal about their desire to remain friends in the face of months of intense campaigning and political friction. Chelsea has said friendship is more important than politics, although she did recently question Ivanka over how her father would promote equal pay.

A representative for Mr Trump did not immediately respond to request for comment.
