From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. Your support makes all the difference. It seems even award-winning actresses are not immune to the dancing craze of twerking, with Dame Helen Mirren becoming the latest star to perform Miley Cyrus’ now trademark dance move.
Seemingly proving age is no limit, the veteran actress treated an audience at Harvard University to her twerking skills after being honoured as Woman of the Year by the university’s 2014 Hasty Pudding Theatricals.
Speaking after receiving the spoof award, Dame Mirren, 68, said: "I’ve tried in my bedroom in private, in front of the mirror, very unsuccessfully so it's absolutely humiliating to have to do it in public in front of a whole bunch of people."
"I obviously couldn’t get out of it - it was an inevitable end to the proceedings," she said.
Hasty Pudding Theatricals, the university’s oldest drama society, which annually honours performers who have made a lasting and impressive contribution to entertainment, presented Mirren with an honorary pudding pot.
She joked that being honoured by Prince Charles as a Dame at Buckingham Palace didn’t come close to winning the pudding pot.
The celebrations also included a parade through Cambridge, Massauchetes, which saw Dame Mirren in an open-top convertible – alongside members of the troop dressed in drag.
It’s all just another days work for the award winning actress, who received the 2007 best actress Oscar for her role as Queen Elisabeth II in The Queen.
