6 May: The Queen, accompanied by The Duke of Edinburgh, today inaugurated the Channel Tunnel with the President of the French Republic (His Excellency Monsieur Francois Mitterrand), accompanied by Madame Mitterrand.
Her Majesty and His Royal Highness this morning opened Waterloo International Terminal and were received by the Chairman, British Railways Board (Sir Robert Reid), and the Mayor of Lambeth (Councillor Marian Schuman).
The Queen unveiled a commemorative plaque and afterwards, with The Duke of Edinburgh, boarded the Eurostar train for France.
On arrival at Coquelles (Calais) Terminal this afternoon, Her Majesty and His Royal Highness were received by The President of the French Republic and Madame Mitterrand.
The Queen and The President jointly opened the Terminal Complex and witnessed a fly-past by Patrouille de France before touring the complex.
Afterwards Her Majesty and His Excellency jointly unveiled a commemorative plaque.
The French Co-Chairman, Eurotunnel (Monsieur Andre Benard), welcomed The Queen and The President of the French Republic and Her Majesty and His Excellency were graciously pleased to reply.
The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh were subsequently entertained to Luncheon by The President of the French Republic and Madame Mitterrand.
Her Majesty and His Excellency, with His Royal Highness and Madame Mitterrand, later embarked on the Shuttle for Cheriton (Folkestone) Terminal and were received there by Her Majesty's Lord-Lieutenant for Kent (the Lord Kingsdown KG) and the Mayor of Folkestone (Councillor Paul Marsh).
The Queen and The President of the French Republic, with The Duke of Edinburgh and Madame Mitterrand, witnessed a fly-past before touring the Terminal Complex.
Afterwards Her Majesty and His Excellency, with His Royal Highness and Madame Mitterrand, visited the Passenger Terminal, escorted by the British Co-Chairman, Eurotunnel (Sir Alastair Morton), and met architects, contractors and staff with their families.
Sir Alastair Morton welcomed The Queen and The President of the French Republic and Her Majesty and His Excellency were graciously pleased to reply.
Subsequently The Queen and The President of the French Republic jointly opened the Terminal Complex and unveiled a commemorative plaque.
The Countess of Airlie, Sir Kenneth Scott, Mr Charles Anson, Mr Simon Gimson and Major James Patrick were in attendance.
6 May: The Prince Edward, Chairman, The Duke of Edinburgh's Award Special Projects Group, this evening launched the Blackwood Open Award Centre at the Miners Institute, Blackwood, and was received by Major Patrick Waller (Deputy Lieutenant of Gwent).
Lieutenant-Colonel Sean O'Dwyer was in attendance.
ST JAMES'S PALACE
6 May: The Prince of Wales, Patron, Music in Country Churches, this evening attended a Concert given by Shura Cherkassky in the Church of St Peter, Walpole St Peter, and was received by Her Majesty's Lord-Lieutenant for Norfolk (Mr Timothy Colman).
Major Patrick Tabor was in attendance.
YORK HOUSE
6 May: The Duchess of Kent, Patron, Cancer Relief Macmillan Fund, this afternoon opened the Macmillan Runcie Day Hospice, Waverley Road, St Albans, Hertfordshire, and was met on arrival by Mr Henry Buxton (Deputy Lord-Lieutenant for Hertfordshire).
Mrs Colin Marsh was in attendance.
