The TV medium Colin Fry has died of lung cancer aged 53.

Fry, who appeared on Most Haunted and presented the popular UKTV show 6ixth Sense, passed away in hospital in the early hours of Monday morning, his management said in a statement on his website. He was diagnosed with terminal cancer in April.

"Colin brought a lot of comfort to his audiences in a career which spanned for more than 30 years,” the statement said. “Our sympathies and condolences go out to Colin’s family and friends.

"We, as his management, for many years would like to add that he was the most charming man with the biggest heart, who devoted his life to helping others, and he will be sorely missed.

"May his dear soul rest in peace.”

Derek Acorah, a medium on Most Haunted, paid tribute to his “close friend” on Twitter, writing: “It is with great sadness that I learned of the passing of my dear friend Colin Fry. Condolences to his family and friend.”

Fry's manager told the Press Association he had a "very big heart" and did not fear death because of his spiritualist beliefs.

Fry became a medium at 17 and went on to become a Reverend of The Spiritualist Church.

He defended his profession in 2008, telling The Independent: "I can only tell you that I know what I do is genuine, and the fame hasn't changed the spiritual side of it. The problem is, a lot of people confuse spirituality with piety. I'm not very patient with the 'away with the fairies' lot."
