From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. Chris Rock has been criticised for posting a joke about Lamar Odom after the athlete’s divorce to Khloe Kardashian was called off.

The comic posted an image to Twitter saying: “Here’s to Lamar Odom on being the first guy in history to have coke and hookers save his marriage.”

Users called him “insensitive” for making fun of Odom so soon after he was left fighting for his life after being found unconscious in a brothel in the Las Vegas area, while others pointed out that he’d stolen the joke from the account @someecards and put his own watermark over the top.

Odom was found with traces of cocaine in his blood and had a ‘white powder’ around his nose and mouth, which had been bleeding heavily.

He has since regained consciousness and has been transferred to a hospital in the Los Angeles area.

Since regaining consciousness, his divorce has also been called off. He separated from the Kardashian in 2013 but due to the lengthly paperwork process the two were still legally married when he was in a coma, meaning Kardashian had to make all medical decisions on his behalf.

Rock has recently been confirmed as the host of the 2016 Oscars, but the jury is out on whether his blunt jokes will go down well with the conservative Hollywood crowd.
