Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Bill Cosby has shown his gratitude to Jill Scott and Whoopi Goldberg after they both publicly expressed their support for him amid numerous rape allegations made against him.
The actor and comedian has denied all claims. The most recent allegation claims that Cosby sexually assaulted an underage girl, who has since filed a lawsuit seeking a jury trial and an unlimited amount of compensatory damages.
He shared two tweets thanking Goldberg and Scott, who have both questioned why the alleged victims didn’t go to the police at the time of the alleged assaults.
In November, Goldberg said on US television show The View that she had “a lot of questions” about the claims and would “reserve… judgement”.
“Perhaps the police might have believed it. Or the hospital. Don't you do a kit when you say someone has raped you?” she asked.
“Isn’t that the next step once you make an allegation? Don’t the cops take you into a hospital for a kit?”
Last month, singer Scott was asked to sign a petition urging Temple University to cut their involvement with Cosby, who served as a board member of the alma mater. He resigned from his position this week.
She was later questioned by social media users over the tweet and called the allegations “insane”.
The singer brought the conversation to end this week, adding that rape victims need to support any claims with “evidence”.
In 2006, Andrea Constand claimed that Cosby had drugged and assaulted her in his Philadelphia mansion in 2004 - allegations firmly denied by his lawyers. Over 13 alleged victims were proposing to testify but the civil case with Constand settled in 2006. The terms of the settlement remain undisclosed.
Cosby has never been arrested or charged with any offence arising from the allegations.
