From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

As Barack Obama comes to the end of his two-term presidency, he appears to be fine with letting protocol and the mask slip slightly – much to his supporters’ delight.

Speaking at a rally for the Democrat candidate Hillary Clinton in Greensboro, North Carolina on Tuesday, Mr Obama was interrupted by a heckler.

Instead of just leaving security and the secret service to escort the hecklers off the premises, the outgoing president took matters into his own hands.

“Somebody hollering again?” he asked, turning to face them. “You know what? Here’s the deal, try to get your own rally, try to get your own rally. You gotta get your own rally!"

As the crowd whooped and cheered, he continued: “See! If you can’t get your own rally don’t come and mess up somebody else rally.”

Mr Obama is not the only person from his administration who recently called out a heckler. Last month, Vice President Joe Biden responded to an Iraq War protester who shouted: “My friend died, we fought for America”, while he was campaigning for Ms Clinton in Cleveland, Ohio.

“Yeah, so did my son,” a sombre-looking Mr Biden replied.

Beau Biden died from brain cancer in 2015, he was bronze star veteran who had served a long deployment in Iraq.
