Barack Obama has taken a swipe at Donald Trump, saying the role of the president is a serious one and wholly different to that of reality television.

Appearing on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Thursday night, the President quipped the Democrat party were pleased with the nomination of Mr Trump.

Mr Obama also explained he was worried about the Republican Party and its trajectory in recent years.

“The main role I'm going to be playing in this process is to remind the American people that this is a serious job. This is not reality TV,” Obama said in an excerpt released by NBC.

Mr Trump hosted The Apprentice, a popular reality show, for 14 seasons between 2004 and 2015.

When asked whether he thought Republicans were pleased with their presumptive presidential nominee, Mr Obama quickly responded, saying, “We are,” causing the crowd to laugh. “But I don't know how they're feeling.”

“That’s too easy,” he then added, before saying, “The truth is, I am worried about the Republican Party.”

This is the first time Mr Obama has made an appearance on the show.

Mr Obama has not yet endorsed any of the candidates in the presidential race, remaining neutral in the Democrat primaries.
