Heard, 30, an actress best known for her role in Magic Mike XXL, filed for divorce from Johnny Depp, 52, at the beginning of last week. In doing so, she also requested her estranged husband pay her lawyer's fees and spousal support. Depp has asked a judge to reject these requests.
The couple’s marriage has become increasingly contentious in the week following Heard’s decision to file for a divorce. Last Friday, Heard was granted a temporary domestic violence restraining order against Depp after she alleged he had been violent towards her on multiple occasions during their 15-month marriage.
In recently released documents obtained by CNN, Heard has now revealed she has made almost $27,000 so far this year (as of 31 May) from royalties from appearances in past projects such as Magic Mike XXL and The Cleveland Show.
The actress stated she claims nearly $44,000 a month in expenses. These monthly costs include $10,000 a month for rent, $10,000 a month for entertainment, presents and holidays, $2,000 a month for eating out, $3,000 a month for health care fees which are not paid for by insurance and a combined $10,000 a month for pet supplies and public relations, agent and attorney costs.
Celebrity Net Worth estimates Heard as having a fortune of approximately $9 million while it estimates Depp as having a fortune of roughly $400 million.
Since Heard filed for divorce, the couples' marriage has dominated headlines. Last Friday, Heard appeared in court, with a visible bruise on her face, alleging that Depp threw an iPhone at her face last Saturday and a month before “grabbed [her] by the hair and violently shoved [her] to the floor”.
Depp’s lawyer, Laura Wasser, responded by claiming that Heard’s application for a restraining order was the result of unfavourable media coverage she has received and an attempt to “secure a premature financial resolution”.
Yesterday, Heard issued a lengthy statement responding to the last week's events through her lawyers. In it, she said had not previously chosen to release a statement to the Los Angeles Police Department in order to safeguard her privacy and Depp’s career, explaining that she had now released a full statement to the LAPD about the alleged domestic violence she has endured.
Heard said her actions had not been in any way prompted by money and stated that she was a “financially independent woman”.
“Amber has suffered through years of physical and psychological abuse at the hands of Johnny,” Heard’s lead attorney Samantha F. Spector and her co-counsel Joseph P. Koenig claimed in a statement sent to The Independent.
“In domestic violence cases, it is not unusual for the perpetrator's playbook to include miscasting the victim as the villain,” it continued. "In reality, Amber acted no differently than many victims of domestic violence, who think first of the harm that might come to the abuser, rather than the abuse they have already suffered.”
The full statement can be read here.
Depp has not made a public statement since the restraining order was granted but he did release a comment responding to the news that Heard was seeking spousal support and there was no prenuptial agreement in place.
“Given the brevity of this marriage and the most recent and tragic loss of his mother, Johnny will not respond to any of the malicious false stories, gossip, misinformation and lies about his personal life," the statement read. "Hopefully, the dissolution of this short marriage will be resolved quickly."
Representatives for Heard and Depp did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
