From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. A glamour model who appeared in the reality TV series Geordie Shore has died after falling from a first floor flat in Brighton.

Aimee Spencer, who worked under the name Carla Mai, fell from the window of the flat on 11 July and died from her injuries a week later. She was 27.

Ms Spencer appeared in an episode of Geordie Shore with regular cast member Vicky Pattison and was also a trained chef with a level 3 diploma.

A spokesperson for Sussex Police said her death was being treated as suspicious. A 28-year-old man from Brighton has been arrested in connection with her death.

A 28-year-old woman has also been detained on suspicion of possession of a class A drug with intent to supply. They are both on bail until 5 September.

Sussex Police said in a statement: “The 27-year-old woman who fell from a window of a Brighton flat has sadly died from her injuries at the Royal Sussex County Hospital on Monday.

“The woman had been in a critical condition since she was discovered having fallen from the first-floor flat window in Chichester Terrace on Monday 11 July at 9.08am.

“Officers are continuing to investigate the circumstances of how she fell from the window.”
