Cara Delevingne, a 20-year-old who grew up in posh Belgravia, has recently bagged her first British Vogue cover and trotted down the catwalk for the likes of Chanel, Marc Jacobs and Oscar de la Renta in Paris and New York. Now she’s back home for London Fashion Week, where the size-six superstar will appear at Topshop’s Unique show – one of the most hotly anticipated on the capital’s style calendar.
Another pretentious airhead?
Despite a public-school education at Bedales, and having more high-profile connections than members of the Cabinet (her grandfather is a former English Heritage chairman and her grandmother was a lady-in-waiting to Princess Margaret), Delevingne remains down to earth. “I love modelling. I’m so lucky and I appreciate everything I have because I never thought it was going to happen,” she told Vogue. The photographer Mario Testino calls her “the new Kate Moss”.
A step too far?
We’ll have to wait and see whether Delevingne can match Moss’s longevity and pop culture nous, but so far she’s doing a pretty good job. She regularly tweets pictures of herself looking far from her best to her 440,000 followers, and her preferred garb is a onesie with colourful trainers (“I hate high heels more than anything”). She was even spotted wolfing down a late-night McDonald’s in New York.
Does she indulge in any model behaviour?
Of course she does. Just as exclusive venues played host to Kate, Sadie and Jude in the 90s, today no showbiz website is complete without a dozen photos of the nightly exploits of Delevingne, her alleged ex-boyfriend Harry Styles and her best friend, the pop singer Rita Ora.
