Your support makes all the difference.Sir Martin Garrod, who died on 17 April aged 73, commanded the Royal Marines and helped bring peace to Bosnia and Herzegovina in the 1990s. Born in Darjeeling, India, in May 1935, he became a Naval officer and joined the Marines, serving in, among other places, Cyprus, Borneo and Belfast.
He went to Bosnia as a member of the EC Monitor Mission in 1993, helping rebuild Mostar, and, valued for his common touch, was appointed the EU Special Envoy in 1995. When he left the region in 1998, its greatly improved condition owed much to him.
