Members of a Pagan group urged peers to agree that pounds 6m should be spent adjusting the Channel Tunnel Rail Link route to safeguard an ancient and spiritual site. Representatives of the Odinic Rite appeared before a House of Lords committee to plead for a tunnel on the route to be lengthened by 340m to preserve the peace and sanctity of the White Horse Stone.

The landmark, near Sandling, near Maidstone in Kent, is thought to be the site of the Battle of Aylesford in AD 455, which gave birth to Kent, the first English kingdom.
