Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference. The Duchess of York's friend, John Bryan, was yesterday made bankrupt over "substantial" debts, including pounds 30,000 owed to her sister.
After a 20-minute private hearing before Mr Deputy Registrar Brettle, solicitor Kathryn Garbett, who is acting for Jane and Rainer Luedecke, said: "We are pleased with the successful outcome of our client's applciation. Mr Bryan had over six months to settle his obligation to meet our clients' costs arising from the judgment against him in July 1994." She added: "Mr Bryan is solely responsible for the predicament in which he now finds himself."
The petition was brought by the Luedeckes over pounds 30,000 costs incurred in a legal battle over Hello! magazine's exclusive photographs of their wedding. In July 1994, the High Court ordered Mr Bryan to pay them pounds 55,000 after arranging the magazine coverage. The couple claimed he breached the agreement they had with him. None of the parties attended court.
