Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

The Conservative Party has revived their media monitoring unit under the directorship of the right- wing researcher, Julian Lewis, to counter alleged media bias against the Government in the run-up to the general election.

Mr Lewis, who angered Labour MPs at the last election by highlighting their past membership of CND, said the unit's main task would be to monitor media interviews and speeches in the Commons by Labour and Liberal Democrat candidates which could be used against them by Conservatives.

"On those occasions when it is necessary to attack bias, I freely acknowledge I will do so, just as the Labour Party feels it is necessary to complain," he said.

He limbered up for the task with a salvo at the BBC over a documentary marking the 50th anniversary of the dropping of the bomb on Hiroshima.

Mr Lewis complained that it was a "biased history programme" featuring an American academic whom he described as one of the "eight founding fellows of the pro-Marxist Institute for Policy Studies" in Washington.

In the past, the Tories' media monitoring unit has been set up only for short periods, in the run-up to a general election or the European elections.

Mr Lewis added yesterday: "It will be salutary for the media to know this unit is back in action."
