Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

A victory for "broadcasting over narrowcasting" was how the Radio 3 controller described his network's snaffling of the Gold Award for Station of the Year at last night's Sonys (the so-called "Oscars of the British radio industry).

The station won the big prize for its ability to juggle its eclectic mix of classical music, world music and jazz. The Senegalese singer Baaba Maal (acknowledged by Wright as "one of the world's great musicians") was there at the Grosvenor House hotel in London's Park Lane, to present Radio3 with its gong. Just a shame that R3 has just axed its Awards for World Music.

Still, a good night for serious radio. Radio 3, which is enjoying slow but steady growth in its audience over the past year, also picked up gold in The Music Special Award (for "Vaughan Williams: Valiant for Truth"), and in The Music Programme Award (for "Words and Music"), while Classic FM (otherwise known as "our friends and colleagues at Classic FM", as Wright chummily referred to his rivals from the stage) took The Music Programming Award.
