Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Today, in conjunction with the online social influence monitor PeerIndex, The Independent launches a search for 2011's most influential, non-celebrity voices on Twitter.
After a year in which the social networking medium has played a crucial role in promoting public awareness of important news stories – from the Arab spring to super-injunctions, the August riots to the death of Osama bin Laden - we believe that it is time to honour the otherwise unsung voices whose tweets have both described and set the national and international news agenda.
To take part in this search, go to http://independent.peerindex.com and follow the instructions to nominate for the ordinary tweeters who have influenced you most this year.
Voters can nominate their top sources in eight categories including news, business, celebrity, arts and technology. Nominations close at midnight on Tuesday 13th December.
PeerIndex will analyse the nominations and apply their proprietary technology (which measures influence through a variety of measures such as levels of retweeting and the degree of authority that Twitter users ascribe to individual tweeters) to identify the leading voices in each category.
Results will be published in the Independent before Christmas.
