Martin Lewis: My Week in Media
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip. It's finished now and there's no new series, which is a tragedy. The last three episodes were brilliant. I've met very few people who really liked it, but I thought it was the best series this year. I loved the mixture of politics and television, because it's where I live my life doing television and discussing money. I thought the Extras Christmas special was fantastic. Ricky Gervais having a go at the tabloids was fascinating and very brave, and Heather Mills McCartney could learn something from it, because he made it so subtle and powerful by doing it in character.
Last week I read...
I normally buy The Times and The Guardian then read the rest online. For columnists, I like Matthew Parris in The Times and Yasmin Alibhai-Brown in The Independent. I tend not to read the personal finance pages during the week, but I like Diana Wright in The Sunday Times. My journalism is preventive, whereas she's a problem-solver.
Last week I listened to...
I've never bought a record, a tape or a CD in my life. I don't listen to music. By nature I'm a Five Live listener, and I love their blend of news and sport. Richard Bacon has taken over the morning programme and he hosted a great debate on the shortage of energy supplies. It's difficult to make that a lively subject, but I thought he did it very punchily and got it spot on. I love his irreverence. I always try to listen to Jeremy Vine, if only they'd stop putting music in the programme! The one personal finance news source of any variety that I really rate is Moneybox on Radio 4, so I always try to listen to that, too.
Last week I surfed...
Google News is my first read of the day. I'm always near a computer. I read the forums on my own site because they're my biggest source of information on money saving. It's an incredible resource there are 25 paperback books-worth of information written on the forums every day. January always sees massive traffic on the moneysaver site. I found a great new credit card from Air Miles and LloydsTSB. If you get it from the Air Miles website you can spend 10 and get 1500 Air Miles, which is enough to get to Rome and back. I have a public profile on Facebook, which I use a lot, but I've hit the 5,000 friends limit and there are about 10,000 more queued.
