Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

The wife of TV actor Chris Langham has spoken for the first time of her anger over his downloading of child pornography.

Christine Langham, 54, who stood by her husband during his trial, conviction and imprisonment, said she accepted his explanation for downloading horrific images of child sexual abuse.

But in a joint interview with her husband, she reveals her fury at what she called his "stupid" behaviour.

Langham, 58, told a court he was looking at the clips as part of research for a television show he was writing.

The Thick of It actor also said he was abused himself as an eight-year-old by a family friend.

He was convicted and sentenced to 10 months in prison but was released on appeal in November after three months.

In an interview with the The Observer she revealed the couple, who have two children, Harry, 11, and Emily, 13, are struggling to keep their home because he has been out of work for more than two years.

And she describes how she struggled to come to terms with what he had done.

She said: "We had to talk about it quite thoroughly for me to understand it.

"But I think I know him so well. I did have to, initially, look at the gravity of the situation and really examine it, but I didn't ever disbelieve or distrust Chris.

"There are times when I've been angry. I've said to him: 'Did you not think first?' I know it's not about him having any sexual entertainment out of these images, but I did say: 'For someone so intelligent, why were you so stupid?'"

The interview comes ahead of Langham's appearance on TV this week.

He is interviewed on Shrink Rap on More4 by TV psychotherapist Pamela Stephenson, wife of comic Billy Connolly.
