ITV bosses believe the programme, currently hosted by Cat Deeley, may be nearing the end of its shelf-life, according to Broadcast magazine.
The production company responsible for the show has put together a revamped version of the programme in a last-ditch attempt to save it.
But a senior ITV source told Broadcast that getting rid of the show was currently "on the table".
Stars In Their Eyes began in 1990 and it was previously presented by Leslie Crowther and later by Matthew Kelly.
It spawned spin-off versions featuring celebrities and kids.
In recent weeks ITV has wielded the axe over other once-popular shows such as Footballers' Wives, Celebrity Fit Club and Rosemary and Thyme.
However an ITV spokeswoman yesterday denied that the channel had any plans to axe the Stars in Their Eyes.
