Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Last week I watched...

Sadly, I've been watching the car crash that is Celebrity Big Brother. It's like porn: compulsively disgusting to watch. As an actor, I find people fascinating, but there's something false and unnatural about the show, and I'm trying to wean myself off it. I also tuned in for Tottenham vs Arsenal in the Carling Cup. I used to play for the Arsenal celebrity XI, so I'm a closet Gunner. I love the way they play; Arsène Wenger's really brought the beautiful game back to British football.

Last week I listened to...

I must be getting old, because I mostly listen to Five Live or Radio 4. I particularly like Simon Mayo and Mark Kermode battling it out over films. Kermode's a brilliant critic, and very clever about how he watches them. When I do tune to music stations, it all sounds the same: bum-bum-hip-hop. I used to be a music lover, though, and my driver at the Blood Diamond premiere played a fantastic blues CD, which reminded me how music ought to be.

Last week I surfed...

I actually Googled the name of my character in Blood Diamond, Captain Poison, and discovered a site for a children's book called Captain Poison and Saucy Pantaloons. I also spend lots of time on Google Earth. If I go abroad, I always look up where I've been, and I occasionally have a peek at the family home in Barbados. Also, I can see my home in south London, as it's got a pattern on the roof.

Last week I read...

The previous owners of my house were members of the National Trust. I still get their mail. This month's NT magazine has a big piece on the 200th anniversary of slavery being abolished. As a descendant of one of Lord Harewood's slaves, I think it's an issue we should now explore, look at and acknowledge. Not with a feeling of shame, but so we can move forward. As far as newspapers go, I always get The Observer: I like to lie in bed with the Culture section.
