From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

"2009 fail list (#2009faillist)" is the top trending topic on Twitter on the morning of December 4.

December is traditionally the time when large companies post their "best of" and "worst of" lists for the year. People on Twitter are joining this trend by contributing their own lists of things they thought were failures in 2009.

"The Jacksons trying to get publicity just cause Michael died" and "Beyonce's collection of leotards and lace front wigs" were listed among the things people thought were the worst moments of 2009.

H1N1, Tiger Woods, Kanye West, Balloon Boy, Sarah Palin, Chris Brown and the recession were also included in many Twitter failure lists posted on December 4, 2009.

A second trend that is hot on the fingers of many tweeters Friday is what they find addictive ("#imaddicted2"). "My sweet little naive cute best friend," "twitter and music," "ice cream and cigarettes," "procrastination and chocolate" are just some of the many addictions microbloggers are sharing.

The top 10 most talked about topics on Twitter on December 4 at 9:30 AM GMT are:
